Currently, fossil fuels are the main source of energy for most of the world, but we have paid a dear price for it. The Swedish Scientist, Svante Arrhenius was the first person to state that the usage of fossil fuels would lead to global warming back in 1896 and this has certainly become the case. As a result, the creation and use of alternative energy resources has become even more important if we are to escape the harmful effects of fossil fuels. So, with that said, we will now take a closer look at some of the different types of energy sources available.
The first alternative energy source that we will look at is hydrogen gas. This is an excellent form of fuel because it is clean burning, meaning that when it is produced, the only emissions are warm air and water vapor. Unfortunately, the issue with this form of fuel is that it is mainly created through the use of fossil fuels and natural gas, which counteracts the entire idea behind using it. However, hydrogen has can also be created through electrolysis, which removes the issue of using fossil fuels and natural gas.
Next, when it comes to alternative energy resources, it is often best to look at what is naturally available. Wind energy has become increasing popular in recent years since it offers the energy we require and it generates no waste whatsoever. Currently, over 20 million homes in the USA are powered by wind energy and this number is only growing. The downsides of using this type of energy is that the wind turbines that have to be created to generate wind energy tend to be quite large which restricts views and they are also dangerous to wildlife.
The third type of alternative energy we will look at is wave energy. Wave energy has a significant advantage to tidal energy because the machines can be placed deep within the ocean at different locations. There is a huge amount of potential if wave energy is properly harnessed and it doesn’t produce any emissions. However, the main reasons why this type of energy hasn’t been properly harnessed is because of the cost to create the systems and there hasn’t been enough research and time to determine how this type of energy affects the ecosystem.
Solar energy is the next type of energy source that we’ll cover and it is typically the first thought that comes to mind when this topic is discussed. The harnessing and usage of solar power has evolved drastically over the years and it is now being used in family homes and even for large scale energy production. Many countries actively encourage the usage of solar power through their policies and tax exemptions. This source of energy is completely renewable and it doesn’t have any emissions or negative effects on the planet.
In closing, we have just looked at a few different types of alternative energy sources and the pros and cons of using them. With that said, it is extremely important to use more alternative energy sources as oppose to fossil fuels, since the life of our planet and future generations depends on it.
